New Program for 2009/2010

An Exchange Program for Emerging Grassroots Leaders in Turkey and the U.S.

Strengthening Democratic Institutions

In a very short period of time, the world has witnessed the emergence of fledgling democracies in Central and Eastern Europe, and is now witnessing tremendous economic, political, and social change in Russia and the NIS (newly independent states). Countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America are rewriting their constitutions, changing to multi-party systems and allowing opposition groups to have greater voice in their own governance.

Accordingly, Heartland International undertakes many short-term training programs with a focus on strengthening democratic institutions, ranging from free media to educational development; healthcare evaluation to non-governmental organization-building; governance, justice systems and civil society to employment organizations; and every sector in between.  In addition to professionally relevant seminars and site visits, participants learn about the culture and civil society in the U.S., and the key components of a strong citizenry protected by its government.
