Africa Program

Heartland International specializes in the areas of democracy and economic development programs in Eastern and Southern Africa. While many countries in Africa are rewriting their constitutions, changing to multi-party systems and allowing opposition groups to have greater voice in their own governance, businesses are being privatized with increasing opportunity for entrepreneurship and new business development. In efforts to support these changes, Heartland international works with individuals and associations on strengthening business and NGO management skills, legislative staff development, and advancing civic education. The training programs are conducted in the U.S. as well as Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda, Namibia and Lesotho.

  • L.E.A.D. - Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Advocacy and Development:  Working with TAWE, Heartland International is training a core group of TAWE members to serve as mentors to a new generation of women entrepreneurs in Tanzania.

  • Strengthening Judicial Rule in Tanzania, Heartland International developed a program for women Judges from Tanzania focusing on the U.S. juvenile court system. The program participants gained insight as to how the U.S. legal system deals with delinquent and neglected children and the social services available to them.

  • Civic Education, Working with civic education partners, Heartland International developed a comprehensive civic education program implemented by educators and NGO leaders in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda and Namibia.

  • Advancing Legislative Development, Heartland International developed and implemented a study mission to Chicago, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. for Members of Parliament from Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, and Lesotho. Participants compared the American democratic political system and the role of political parties with their own traditions.
