Heartland International
is a non-profit organization
based in Chicago, Illinois. For over two decades the
organization has been designing and implementing
international programs that promote
the development of civil society around the world.
Heartland
International's programs
target participants from a wide range of professions
such as government officials, education administrators,
NGO workers and leaders from diverse Sectors.
Programs provide a forum for the exchange of ideas
and best practices that empower participants to
pursue their common goal - changing their
communities one step at a time.
Heartland
International has cultivated a wide network of
organizations and professionals in the Chicago area that
support these dynamic programs by sharing their
expertise, skills and knowledge. Program
participants engage with their U.S. counterparts through
roundtables, seminars, and site visits. Many also
experience American culture up close and personal
through "home stays" - staying with volunteer
host families during their stay in Chicago.
Recent
programs focused on:
-
Freedom of the press and media
organization management for Ukrainian media executives,
-
Improving
educational standards
for Liberian
educators.
-
A
leadership program for emerging grassroots leaders
in Turkey and the U.S.
Chicago presenters and professionals
benefit too. By sharing their experiences with
program participants they get an international
perspective in their interest area. Presenters often say
they gain as much - or more - as they give, by
participating in Heartland International's
programs.
Programs
are
mostly funded by grants from the U.S. government-- Department of
State-- or subcontracts with USAID contractors.
Emerging young leaders capacity
building is a major emphasis of
these programs. Since
2009 we have been working with young Kenyan
entrepreneurs to help strengthen and grow their
businesses. This program extends through 2011 to include
cycles of Kenyan business owners having internships in
Chicago and the U.S. business hosts traveling to Kenya
to enhance the training program there.
Similar two-way exchanges are also taking place
between emerging grassroots leaders in Chicago and
Turkey; and Nicaragua and Belize.
These programs and more
are helping to make Heartland International's vision -
the spread of participatory citizenship around the world
- a reality.
Informing the local community about international policy
and development issues is a responsibility that
Heartland International takes seriously.
Each first Tuesday of the month the public is
invited to a free discussion on a current international
topic led by an expert in that field.
We are proud to offer these programs where
informative presentations lead to lively exchanges in an
informal setting.
Heartland
International is
a 501(c )(3) not for profit organization.
